The Ultimate Guide to Cordless Rivet Tools

Understand the growing popularity of using cordless rivet tools and the benefits of using them, while getting a comprehensive review of top cordless riveting tools.

Even in a mature industry such as rivets, lock bolts, and threaded inserts, new technology continues to drive innovation. Perhaps one of the greatest innovations has been in high-powered batteries, which have changed the design of cordless installation tools.

In the past, riveting tools required long hoses for air-powered or pneumatic rivet guns. Riveting tools were clumsy and could be difficult to use on job sites or for joints in restricted spaces. Advances in battery technology have changed that. Today, riveting tools are more compact and can be powered by rechargeable batteries, making it easier to use them virtually anywhere. Today’s battery systems deliver more power and maintain a charge for longer periods, eliminating the need for cumbersome cords. In fact, battery-powered riveting tools have become commonplace and are used in all industries, from consumer electronic manufacturing to bridge construction.

With the arrival of these new battery systems, there are more cordless fastener tools available than ever before. Name- brand manufacturers such as POP, Huck, Marson, Gesipa, Lobster, Gage Bilt and Goebel all have their own battery-operated riveting tools, each designed with different power and performance metrics for different applications.

Choosing the right tool for any job can be tricky, especially when you have a growing number of fastener types. Bay Supply has assembled this guide to inform OEMs, service technicians, trade mechanics, construction managers, and others as to what is new in cordless riveting tools and to help them choose the right battery- powered tools for their specific needs and applications.

Chapter 2

The Evolution of Cordless Tools

Cordless tools have freed technicians, installers, and line workers from being tied to an air compressor or hydraulic reservoir.

Although these types of traditional riveting tools are still used in the shop or on the factory floor, more people are adopting handheld, battery-powered riveting tools, largely thanks to advances in battery technology.

When rechargeable, battery-operated power tools first hit the market, they used sealed lead-acid batteries, much like those used in cars. These batteries just weren’t adequate for the task; they were large, heavy, didn’t hold a charge well, and couldn’t deliver the torque most rivet tools needed. Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries, which can be recharged many times and deliver a lot of power, revolutionized the portable tool industry. In fact, most consumer power tools still use NiCd batteries because they are durable and reliable. For the first time, handheld tools could be used without a hose or power cord, and the battery packs could be compact and light enough to make these tools easy to handle in any situation.

What really revolutionized the design of battery-operated riveting tools was the lithium-ion battery. Over the past few years, tool makers have started to standardize on lithium-ion batteries because these batteries can deliver the same power as compressed air or pneumatic tools, and they can run for long periods on a single charge. Most rivet tools are used repeatedly in short bursts throughout the day, and the lithium-ion battery delivers more consistent power and longer service with a single charge and has a fast recharge. More importantly, these batteries are light and compact, making for easy-to-use, high-performance portable riveting tools.

Due to their durability, mobility, and reliability, battery-operated riveters are becoming the tools of choice for many professionals. These tools are ergonomic, easy to use, and can be used for extended periods without concerns about power or performance. It’s simply a matter of choosing the right battery-powered tool with the best specifications for the job.

Chapter 3

Applications of Cordless Tools

As cordless tools continue to improve, they offer the same power and performance as conventional riveting tools, but they are much easier to handle.

Their light weight and compact design makes them ideal for use in the field, such as for construction or on-site repairs. They also enable blind fasteners to be used in relatively tight spaces for applications that were previously impractical.

Cordless tools can be used virtually anywhere. For aerospace applications, for example, cordless tools make it easier to assemble air frames because you can use the tools anywhere during fuselage
and wing assembly. For construction, they can be used for any building application, including heavy-duty fasteners. They also are ideal for applications such as truck repair or automotive work, and they are light enough to be used on ladders and scaffolds for applications in the sign and window trades.

Battery-powered tools are gaining popularity on the factory floor, as well. Not only are they lighter than traditional tools and ergonomically designed to make them easier to handle for long periods with less fatigue, but they are also quieter. And the torque threshold for cordless tools is typically around 105 newton-meters; the threshold for electric or pneumatic tools is 50 newton-meters or higher, so cordless tools have plenty of power. In fact, many of the newest plants are standardizing on cordless tools to eliminate cords and hoses all over the floor.

Cordless tools are increasingly durable. In addition to lithium-ion batteries, they often feature brushless motors for lasting performance without the need for service. Many of the latest cordless tools also feature hybrid switches to eliminate mechanical failure.
